How do I change my URL in WordPress and Why is it so Important to check for broken Links

You can easily change the Site URL for your WordPress page any time you want, but there are a few important adjustments that must be made before making the switch.

Steps to follow:

1. Change WordPress URL in WordPress Admin Dashboard.

  1. After downloading all your site files to your local PC and then moving them to your new URL, you will need to log into your WordPress Dashboard as an administrator.
  2. Next, you will click on Settings from the menu, and then General. …
  3. Then you will enter the new (URL) Addresses on the two fields as shown below.
  4. The next step will be to scroll down the page and click on the Save Changes button.

Now, there is a chance where WordPress Address and Site Address are not editable. In other words, If the fields are not editable (as seen below), it’s most likely because they are hard-coded in wp-config.php file.

So if that is the case then, changing WordPress URL in wp-config.php file may be the solution for it.

2. Change WordPress URL in wp-config.php File

The second most common way to change your WordPress URL as we have previously mentioned, is via your wp-config.php file. It is important to note that values in wp-config.php override the settings in method one.

3. Change WordPress Site URL Via phpMyAdmin

  1. Log into the cPanel account for the domain in question.
  2. Click on the “phpMyAdmin” icon within the “Databases” section.
  3. Expand the database associated with the WordPress installation and select the “wp_options” table.
  4. Search for “siteurl” within the “option_name” column and click the “Edit” link on the same row.

So now that you have completed all the necessary changes and updated everything with your site, this should be the time to check for broken links.

I usually use broken-links-finder from SeoPrimeTools.com.

Why having broken web links is so bad and why you should fix it?

Dead hyperlinks on websites are not just annoying, their existence may cause some real damage to your online business as well as to your reputation in the Internet!

Because of that same situation, a web-site owner may:

  • Lose some of the existing customer base (current users may sooner or later get frustrated enough to never come back);
  • Get problems with potential clients (because of the dead web links people simply won’t be finding things/pages they are looking for);
  • Damage your site reputation (most of online customers consider stale hyperlinks as demonstration of no respect to them from the site’s owners);
  • Have negative impact on your website’s ratings with major Search Engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing etc…

As you can see, broken links can be problematic for website visitors, making them unable to access the desired resource or information. These users may decide to make use of another site to find the necessary information elsewhere. A site that hasn’t been updated or checked for a long time may suffer from link rot, which is a term used to describe a site with dozens of broken links.

Why your site needs a SSL Certificate and Why you should use SSL Checker

Just to name a few benefits:

  • SSL Certificates Secure the Transfer of Data. It's important to secure data that's submitted to your web server from your users, especially if that data is sensitive in nature.
  • An SSL Certificate has SEO Benefits.
  • SSL Certificates Earn Your Users' Trust.

In other words, an SSL Certificate is nowadays a must have, not only for a respected online shop, but also for any website at large. SSLs are widespread on web pages where users sign in to a backend area. Even Google has also openly confirmed its preference for websites whose traffic is redirected to HTTPS.

But even with those recommendations and the benefits SSL Certificate may bring to a site, many site owners are just not interested in having it installed in their sites.

Sadly, I have noticed that many Government, University or even some Financial Institution owned Sites lack SSL Certificate on their sites, and if any, it's wrongly installed or it does not redirect their pages to https://.

Just think about it. If you or your hosting provider have installed a SSL Certificate for your site, the first thing you should do is to check if your SSL Certificate is correctly installed and if it's redirecting all pages to https://.

You can always Google the keyword "ssl checker" and you will see a lot of options to choose from. And if your pages are not redirecting to https://, you can simply use the .htaccess code below to fix the problem.

How to force SSL with .htaccess

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} 80
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [L,R=301]
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !443
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [L,R=301]

You see, nowadays, most Web Hosting Companies offer Let's Encrypt Free SSL Certificates for their clients. So why not take advantage of it? I mean, lets face it. If evil minded people can hack a site that has a SSL Certificate installed, what do you think can happen to a site that has not?

But in this article, I will be talking to those whose websites are being hosted in Hepsia Control Panel.

So what is Hepsia Control Panel all about?
The Hepsia Control Panel is the brainchild of a group of talented web developers who believed that everyone should be able to manage their websites, domain names and billing transactions with ease from a single location.

But this team of talented web developers didn't stop there, they went ahead and added SSL certificates section of the Control Panel which now offers a more simplified and intuitive interface for managing your SSLs.

Which means, you as a website owner, can now generate and add SSL certificates from one place with a click of the mouse.

Plus, the SSL generation procedure itself has been streamlined to help you get your certificate faster and easier.

What are the new SSL section updates about?

SSL certificates are a very effective tool for safeguarding your commercial website and creating trust with your audience.

In recent years SSL certificates have also turned into an important ranking factor as well, with search engines prioritizing ‘https’ sites over non-http ones.

This has made SSL certificates one of the most sought-after services on our platform, which has created a need for some improvements to the way SSL are obtained and managed.

Here is what those improvements are about:

All SSL operations under one roof

So far, the SSL generation procedure has been split between the ‘hosted domains’ section (the “Edit host” option) for domains hosted on our platform and the ‘SSL certificates’ section of the Control Panel for domains hosted somewhere else.

Managing the existing SSL installations has been done through the SSL certificates section.

With SSLs gaining momentum, it has become necessary to make it easier for users to handle the growing number of SSL they have.

For this reason, we’ve moved all SSL generation and management operations under one roof.

This way, you will now be able to easily request and manage SSL certificates from just one place.

SSL certificates organized into two tables

For the sake of convenience, SSL certificates have now been organized into two tables.

On the top of the screen you can see a table of all active domains and subdomains, which are hosted in your account, no matter if they have SSL installed or not:

From there, you will be able to manage all existing SSL certificates with a click of the mouse.

Moreover, you will be able to easily add SSLs to selected hosts, which would help scale up SSL sales for your store:

Scrolling down you will see a table with all domains, which are registered with us but are hosted outside your account, or domains which do not resolve properly for some reason.

Again, you will be able to generate SSL certificates for them or manage the existing installations.

Different SSL scenarios

Depending on the particular SSL case, hosts will be listed in the aforementioned tables like this:

  • A domain with an active SSL – the following information will be listed per certificate: status, expiration date, SSL type (regular/Let’s encrypt); from the ‘details’ column, the user will be able to download the given certificate’s details (CSR, private key, certificate, CA bundle);

  • A domain with a non-active SSL (ordered from us) – a special icon will mark the inactive status of the SSL; the user will need to click on the icon in order to activate the SSL; a modal window will allow them to select the shared/dedicated SSL they want to install the SSL on;
  • A domain without an SSL – a special ‘add SSL certificate’ link will let the user order a regular SSL, request a ‘‘Let’s encrypt’ certificate or upload an SSL, which has been obtained from somewhere else.

Please keep in mind that If you have an SSL installed for a given host, that host will only be able to use an ‘SSL-friendly’ IP address.

So if, for example, you want to point an SSL-installed host to the shared IP of the hosting account (from the ‘edit host’ option in the ‘hosted domains’ section), you will need to deactivate that SSL first.

You can do that by using the “deactivate” icon in the table:

Types of SSL certificates you can obtain and manage on our platform

From the Control Panel, you can order a regular SSL certificate or request the installation of a ‘Let’s encrypt’ certificate.

Both ‘Let’s encrypt’ and regular SSLs will do the encryption job that is expected of them to protect your sites against interception and eavesdropping.

So, your choice will solely be determined by the type of site you manage and hence your security needs.

Here is what you need to consider when choosing an SSL certificate:

‘Let’s encrypt’ certificates – really quick and easy to install. Perfect for non-commercial sites, blogs or photo galleries. Valid for only 90 days and must be renewed before they expire. On our platform, ‘Let’s encrypt’ certificates are renewed automatically, so you won’t have to worry about that.

Regular SSL certificates – include a warranty against misuse or mis-issuance. Suitable for e-stores or enterprise sites, which need warranty-equipped SSL certificate issued by an established CA. Valid for at least one year and can be purchased for more years in advance.

Third-party certificates – if you have an SSL certificate purchased from somewhere else, you can upload it to a selected host with a click of the mouse.

Note:

Apart from being a powerful security feature, SSL certificates are also a great trust indicator and a search ranking factor for websites.

With the newly improved SSL certificates section of the Control Panel, you will now be able to add and manage multiple SSLs from your account much easier than before.

A web-based SSH functionality enabled on our web hosting platform

SSH is a network protocol, which allows technically experienced users to communicate with a server directly.

It gives web hosting customers direct access to the server, so they could manage their resources more effectively.

Thanks to the newly-introduced, web-based SSH functionality, users on our platform can now access a server via their browser instead of having to use a regular SSH client.

Learn more about the benefits of using web-based SSH from our post.

What is SSH about?

As a network protocol, SSH allows a secure connection to be established between computers.

This is most often done via an SSH client, which allows a user to connect to another computer’s SSH server and remotely run commands on that computer.

A user can run an SSH client on any computer and connect to any computer they are authorized to access via the SSH protocol.

With regard to web hosting, SSH would allow users to access their projects on the server and apply various actions to them directly.

For example, a user could list files on the server where their projects are located using simple SSH commands:

What is web-based SSH about?

As its name suggests, web SSH allows users to bypass the regular SSH client and connect to a server using their preferred web browser.

The communication between the browser and the SSH server is done via an intermediary web application server.

All messages to and from the server are transmitted with the help of JavaScript and dynamic HTML and displayed in the user’s web browser.

Here are the main advantages of web-based SSH in a nutshell:

  • Ease of access: No need to download or install any software. Users can access SSH servers through a web browser from anywhere, as long as they have access to their Control Panel.
  • Anonymity: Since SSH access is tunneled through an intermediary web application server, the SSH server will not be aware of the actual client’s IP address.
  • Audit ability: The communication between the browser and the SSH server via the web application server can easily be logged just like with common SSH. This prevents a malicious client from deleting a user’s activity logs.

How does web-based SSH work on our platform?

The web-based SSH option has been easily integrated into the Web Hosting Control Panel.

Users can access it from the Web SSH icon in the header area of the dashboard (it is right next to the Help Centre icon).

Here is how our implementation of web-based SSH works:

When a user clicks on the Web SSH icon, a connection with the SSH server will be initiated automatically via a background script.

This way, the user will not need to enter any login details like if they were using a regular SSH client.

What the user will see is a fast and responsive terminal interface directly in the browser, which is actually just HTML code.

When the user enters any command in the browser and presses the enter key, the same script that is responsible for the secure connection to the server will take the command inputs and pass them over to the server.

From there on, the server will accept the commands, execute them and return the results.

Our script will capture the results and it will output back to the same terminal-like interface.

The user can use the web-based SSH terminal while browsing in the Control Panel or select to view it in full.

This will hide the rest of the control panel but will not cover the rest of the browser window.

Once the user has finished working with the web-based SSH terminal, they can close it by clicking on the “X” icon in the upper right corner.

If they want to keep a log file of their session, they can easily do so by clicking on the Start Log icon in the lower left corner of the browser.

When finished, they can simply download the log file to their device by clicking on the Download Log option.

NOTE: The web-based SSH functionality is freely available for all web hosting plans, which have SSH included as a feature or available to purchase as an upgrade.

***

Web SSH combines the server access capabilities of the SSH protocol with the ease of use and flexibility of the web browser.

It is a great feature that could easily be used from any device and location and adds to the tech-savvy appeal of the Web Hosting Control Panel.

Having the right SEO Tool for a specific task is crucial in a profession that’s as time-consuming and resource-intensive as Search Engine Optimization.

Can you imagine generating a simple XML Sitemap manually?
The answer is simply “NO”, and honestly speaking, we can’t either! With SEO Tools such as; XML Sitemap GeneratorMeta Tag GeneratorMeta Tags AnalyzerRobots.txt Generator and many other tools available at Seoprimetools.com, website owners and SEO Professionals can accomplish their tasks in a matter of seconds; something that would otherwise have taken over 10 to 20 min or so if done manually.

Think about it! A simple Free SEO Tool like, Robots.txt Generator for example!

Did you know that apart from creating robots (or so called User-Agents) that are used by Search Engines to crawl web content, robots.txt file can also define which parts of a domain can be crawled by a robot or not?

Yes, that’s right. The robots.txt file is a simple text file (no html) that is placed in your website’s root directory in order to tell the search engines which pages to index and which to skip. It gives instructions to the search engine by telling them not to visit pages residing in the file. It helps to ban the bot crawlers from entering to private content or folders.

This instruction is useful:

  • If you want search engines to ignore any duplicate pages on your website;
  • If you don’t want search engines to index your internal search results pages;
  • If you don’t want search engines to index certain areas of your website or a whole website;
  • If you don’t want search engines to index certain files on your website (images, PDFs, etc.);
  • If you want to tell search engines where your sitemap is located.

So here, you have the option to either create it manually, which could take you more time, especially if you had some tasks to accomplish in a short period of time, or simply use the Robots.txt Generator tool and do it in a matter of minutes or less.

How Robots.txt Work
Search engines send out tiny programs called “spiders” or “robots” to search your site and bring information back to the search engines so that the pages of your site can be indexed in the search results and found by web users.

Your Robots.txt file instructs these programs not to search pages on your site which you designate using a “disallow” command.

New prices for .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO and .BIZ domains

New prices for .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO and .BIZ domains from May 16th

The group of gTLD ‘veterans’ will undergo a parallel price update on May 16th in accordance with several significant market shifts over the last few years.

Learn more about the upcoming .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO and .BIZ price updates and see how your domain portfolio will stand against the competition after it takes effect.

Why is the price increase needed?

As you may have already noticed, over the last few years the generic TLD registries have updated their domain registration prices on a consistent basis.

The price increase practice started over 10 years ago when ICANN allowed the respective generic registries to increase the cost of registering a domain by however much they deem appropriate.

The main reason behind that move were the registries’ long-term strategic plans to upgrade their security & support infrastructures to the benefit of the domain owners themselves.

Those require substantial funding, the main source of which could namely be the revenue generated by the future domain registrations/transfers/renewals.

Here is a short overview of the TLD price change history:

  1. .COM – the most popular TLD on the web is managed by Verisign. Verisign’s deal with ICANN in 2007 originally allowed them to increase the price of .COM domains by 7% per year. Five years later, however, the U.S. government demanded that the price be frozen for a certain period of time. Verisign and ICANN in turn re-negotiated their contract and agreed on a ‘price freeze’ until 2024.
  2. .NET – originally, the .NET domain price increases were more sporadic prior to 2012. Since 2013, however, the .NET’s registry Verisign has been implementing a 10% incremental pricing policy on an yearly basis.
  3. .BIZ – the first substantial registration/renewal price increase for the Neustar-managed gTLD was introduced in September 2013 when the price for a .BIZ domain was raised by 10%. The second massive price increase came two years later, prompting a parallel .BIZ price change on the market. The same scenario was repeated last year when another 10% were added on top of the .BIZ gTLD’s price.
  4. .INFO – just like with .BIZ, the most significant .INFO price update was initiated in 2013 (by Afilias – the TLD’s registry) and was followed by two other increases (the final one was carried out last summer).
  5. .ORG – the Public Interest Registry (PIR), the overseer of .ORG domains, also made use of its contract rights and initiated a series of updates over the last few years.

What is the price update all about?

In order to minimize the negative effect of this pricing policy on your domain portfolio, over the past five years we’ve done our best to refrain from implementing consistent price updates with the exception of the cases where the new registry prices have gone way higher than expected.

With the new series of gTLD price hikes anticipated to take place throughout 2018 (in fact, the .NET registry already implemented its campaign in February), we’ll be forced to carry out a gTLD-wide price update on our platform as well.

That said, on May 16th, 2018, the .COM, .NET, .ORG, .BIZ and .INFO domain registration, transfer and renewal prices will be increased by an average of 20%.

We’ll be forced to suspend the ‘free-domain-with-a-hosting-plan’ offer for our .NET domains as well.

NOTE: The new price will also apply to all hosting plan-included .NET domains that have been registered for free.

The .COM promotion will not be affected by this update for the time being.
